Lower Extremity Reconstruction Fellowship
Advanced fellowship training in joint reconstruction and total joint replacement
The Division of Orthopedic Surgery at Scripps Clinic offers a one-year fellowship in adult lower extremity (hip and knee) reconstruction and total joint replacement. Fellows participate in pre-operative and post-operative patient evaluation and care, as well as surgery.
Founded in 1984, the program stresses clinical evaluation, surgery, and postoperative management. Fellows become proficient in routine and complex primary hip and knee arthroplasty, revision arthroplasty, as well as non-arthroplasty joint reconstruction, including osteotomy and fresh osteochondral allograft transplantation. Fellows are exposed to a variety of implants and surgical techniques, including computer navigation and small incision surgery.
The fellowship features a strong commitment to education and research, with weekly core curriculum topics, journal reviews, x-ray conferences and dedicated research time. Fellows are expected to conduct and publish at least one clinical and/or basic science research project and have access to an extensive clinical outcomes database and research staff, as well as a fully equipped biomechanics and cartilage research laboratory.
