Specialty Pharmacy

A specialty pharmacy provides medications for treating rare or complex medical conditions and specializes in patient education and monitoring.

When you enroll in our program at Scripps, our specialty pharmacists will reach out to you for a comprehensive consultation. We will ensure the medication you have been prescribed is safe and effective for your specific medical condition. We will provide resources and assist you in answering any questions you may have regarding instructions on your prescription and how to manage potential side effects of the medication.

We will also work with your insurance company, deliver your medications directly to your home, and check in with you regularly for ongoing monitoring and support. We document all consultations in your medical record at Scripps, so your doctor can follow your progress and see how well the medication is working.

Also called specialty drugs, specialty medications treat rare or complex medical conditions, such as cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. These medications usually require additional patient education, monitoring and support to be successful. 

Many specialty medications are high in cost and require special authorization from health insurance companies. These medications also often require special delivery and handling. For this reason, specialty medications are not always available at most retail pharmacies.
