Derek Loewy, PhD, is a clinical psychologist at Scripps Clinic. A sleep medicine specialist, Dr. Loewy treats insomnia and circadian rhythm disorders using cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBTI), light therapy and other behavioral sleep medicine techniques.
Dr. Loewy has been practicing medicine since 2001. He believes everyone has the potential to optimize their sleep, including those who may have had insomnia or poor sleep for many years. Every individual has their own sleep needs and a unique internal body clock that regulates their sleep timing.
By first understanding the factors causing poor sleep, Dr. Loewy can then use validated non-drug treatment techniques and scientific knowledge of human sleep to not only improve sleep, but more importantly the quality of waking life. His goal is to fully understand his patients and provide highly personalized care based on trust and collaboration.
Dr. Loewy’s clinical interests include the non-drug treatment of insomnia and circadian rhythm disorders in adults and adolescents. He is also interested in studying the effect of bright light therapy in the behavioral treatment of insomnia. Dr. Loewy is a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and the California Sleep Society.
When he is not caring for patients, Dr. Loewy enjoys travel, photography and spending time with his daughters.
