Payam Moazzaz, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in minimally invasive spine procedures and robotic spine surgery. Dr. Moazzaz was among the first in the U.S. to perform robotic spine surgery with a first-generation platform that received FDA approval in 2011.
He was also one of the first surgeons using a second-generation robotic spine surgery platform called Mazor X that was introduced nationally in 2016 and is offered at Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas. The Mazor X robotic spine surgery platform is the latest evolution of surgical-guidance technology that has been used in more than 120,000 procedures around the world.
Dr. Moazzaz treats patients who have scoliosis, degenerative disc disease, spinal fractures and spinal tumors. He has performed or teamed with a surgeon partner on more than 800 robotic spine surgeries, including complex adult spinal deformity cases involving several vertebral levels.
A native of Shiraz, Iran, Dr. Moazzaz, is credited with several awards, patents and inventions related to spine care and participates in clinical studies related to adult spinal deformity correction and surgical outcomes of robotic procedures.
