Mark Takata, MD, is a general surgeon with a special interest in minimally invasive, advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgery (weight loss surgery).
Dr. Takata is skilled in bariatric surgery, including laparoscopic gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and gastric band. He is also experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of gallbladder disease, simple and complex hernias, intestinal disease — including colon/intestinal cancer, diverticulitis, obstruction, stomach cancer, and disorders of the spleen and adrenal glands. His other clinical interests include conditions of the esophagus, including cancer, gastroesophageal reflux, hiatal or paraesophageal hernia, and achalasia.
Dr. Takata has focused his research on minimally invasive surgery, with multiple articles published on outcomes from laparoscopic surgery. In addition, he has published many articles and made several presentations in the field of laparoscopic bariatric surgery. He also participates in national, international and multi-institutional studies, investigating the development of the newest weight loss devices.
In addition, Dr. Takata is one of just a few surgeons in San Diego implanting the FDA-approved LINX device for acid reflux (i.e., heartburn, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This laparoscopic procedure is done on an outpatient basis (less than 23-hour stay), under general anesthesia. For patients with reflux that cannot be effectively managed with medication, this procedure may offer a less-invasive option than traditional reflux surgery.
Regardless of the reason a patient may seek his services, Dr. Takata understands there are many potential emotions involved — from excitement and hope for a cure; to pain, stress, uncertainty and anxiety. It is his goal to provide a sense of hope and comfort. He feels that the only way to accomplish this is to listen thoroughly to the patient’s story with compassion and understanding, with the goal of forming a trusted relationship. From here he can provide a clear and detailed treatment plan. Dr. Takata also provides each patient with the same superior and competent treatment that he would hope for his own family. He feels it is an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to help and support people in a time of need.
When he is not caring for patients, Dr. Takata treasures the time spent with his family. He also enjoys reading, surfing, traveling and playing chess.
