Discharge is common and normal but can indicate issues
During pregnancy, a woman’s body undergoes many significant changes. In addition to obvious changes, such as an expanding belly, many expectant mothers notice vaginal discharge that may seem unusual. This is generally normal, but understanding the nature of vaginal discharge during pregnancy can help you be more aware of what is happening in your body and ease concerns — as well as let you know if something may be wrong.
What is vaginal discharge?
Vaginal discharge, which consists of fluid and cells shed by the vagina and cervix, is a natural bodily process.
During pregnancy, vaginal discharge is referred to as leukorrhea; it helps prevent infections by maintaining a healthy balance of bacteria in the vagina and clearing away dead cells. The hormonal changes and increased blood flow to the pelvis that occur during pregnancy can consequently cause noticeable changes in the amount, color, texture and odor of vaginal discharge.
Some of the most common characteristics of normal vaginal discharge during pregnancy include:
● Increased volume: An increased amount of discharge is caused by hormonal shifts, particularly a rise in estrogen.
● Color: Normal discharge is usually white, milky or pale yellow.
● Consistency: Vaginal discharge during pregnancy is generally thin and has a mild odor. It may feel slippery or mucous-like, especially as pregnancy progresses.
“During the end of pregnancy, discharge may become heavier and contain thicker mucus,” says Allison Canavan, MD, an OB-GYN at Scripps Clinic Rancho Bernardo. “Thicker mucous-like discharge could be a phenomenon known as the ‘mucus plug,’ which is a thick collection of mucus that seals the cervix during pregnancy,” Dr. Canavan says.
“While passing this cervical mucous can indicate cervical softening or impending labor, it doesn’t give us a clear sign of when labor will start,” she adds.
When is vaginal discharge a concern?
While changes in vaginal discharge are usually normal, in some cases they may indicate a problem, such as a vaginal infection. It is important to detect and treat infections or bothersome symptoms as soon as possible to avoid complications, so call your doctor if you notice any of the following:
● An unusual color, such as green, gray, or yellow discharge, which could signal an infection. Persistent pink or brown discharge could indicate spotting and should be checked by a doctor.
● A strong odor may be a sign of infection.
● Thick or cottage cheese-like discharge may indicate a yeast infection, which is common during pregnancy due to hormonal fluctuations.
● A significant amount of watery discharge could mean that amniotic fluid is leaking.
In rare cases, abnormal vaginal discharge may signal a more serious issue, such as preterm labor or infection of the amniotic sac. Call your doctor right away if you experience heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain or cramping or unusual discharge with fever.
Tips to maintain vaginal health during pregnancy
Maintaining good vaginal health during pregnancy (and even if you’re not pregnant) can help reduce your risk of infections. Here are a few tips:
● Practice good hygiene. Wash the area with warm water. Avoid using scented soaps or douches, which can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria.
● Wear breathable cotton underwear that helps keep the area dry and reduces the risk of yeast infections.
● Avoid scented feminine hygiene products, as they can cause irritation.
● Stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet. Proper hydration and a diet rich in nutrients help support overall health.
“Any time you have questions or concerns during pregnancy, whether it is about discharge or anything else, don’t hesitate to call your doctor,” says Dr. Canavan. “We are here to help you have a safe, comfortable pregnancy and help you and your baby stay as healthy as possible.”
