Research aims to remotely collect data from inside shoulder

Local news outlets recently interviewed Scripps researchers about a smart shoulder replacement implant designed to remotely monitor and transmit data on the inner workings of a patient’s new shoulder after replacement surgery.

Scripps will develop and test the device in the lab over the next two years and the first implantation in a living patient is likely a few years away. Data from the device could reveal new ways to enhance physical therapy protocols and improve the design of future shoulder replacement devices.
