U.S. News & World Report has ranked Scripps Health’s orthopedics program the best in the San Diego region, and named Scripps among the nation’s best in five specialties in the magazine’s annual “Best Hospitals” list.
The annual U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 33rd year, recognize the nation’s top 50 hospitals that excel in treating patients with the most challenging health care needs. U.S. News evaluates hospitals in 15 adult specialties and 20 common procedures and conditions in order to determine the ranking. Of the more than 4,500 hospitals evaluated this year, only 164 hospitals ranked in at least one of the specialties.
“Scripps’ inclusion on the Best Hospitals list, year after year, is a testament to the exceptional skills and dedication of our physicians, nurses and the rest of our staff,” said Scripps Health President and CEO Chris Van Gorder. “I’m proud of the work everyone does to ensure that Scripps’ legacy of outstanding patient care continues despite the unprecedented and ongoing challenges we have experienced over the past two years.”
The combined programs of Scripps Green Hospital and Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla — listed by the magazine as “Scripps La Jolla Hospitals” — are among the nation’s top 50 hospitals in:
- Orthopedics (No. 13)
- Cardiology (No. 27)
- Obstetrics and Gynecology (No. 32)
- Urology (No. 48)
- Gastroenterology and GI Surgery (No. 48)
Orthopedics
Orthopedics
Nationally ranked for the ninth consecutive year, Scripps hospitals are recognized for excellence in orthopedic surgery, joint replacement, sports medicine and treatment of complex conditions. Treatment options include the latest FDA-approved technologies, devices and procedures at multiple locations throughout San Diego County. The Donald P. and Darlene Shiley Musculoskeletal Center on the campus of Scripps Green Hospital is home to advanced diagnostics, treatment, surgery and rehabilitation services, as well as orthopedic research and education.
Heart care
Heart care
This is the 17th year the Scripps heart program has made the U.S. News national ranking. Scripps is a leading provider of exceptional quality heart care throughout San Diego. The Prebys Cardiovascular Institute at Scripps is one of the largest, most advanced centers on the West Coast for cardiovascular medicine, research and training. Through a longtime partnership with Kaiser Permanente, Scripps also is the exclusive provider of cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology surgery to Kaiser Permanente members in the San Diego region.
Obstetrics and Gynecology
Obstetrics and Gynecology
Nationally ranked for the ninth consecutive year, Scripps obstetrics and gynecology programs are recognized for excellent results with high-risk patients, and for patient survival rates. Scripps OB-GYN doctors provide excellent specialized services such as minimally invasive surgery — including robotic surgery — and advanced clinical technology. The Scripps OB-GYN program includes 40 surgeons who perform a high rate of minimally invasive surgery, reducing patient complications and length of stay in the hospital. Gynecology patients consistently give Scripps high satisfaction scores for expertise, courtesy and friendliness.
Urology
Urology
Nationally ranked for the second consecutive year, Scripps urologists have a wide range of clinical expertise and use advanced diagnostic tools to treat routine and complex urinary conditions, including cancers of the prostate, kidney and bladder. Urologic surgeons offer progressive treatment methods, including minimally invasive and robot-assisted procedures. These surgical treatments feature smaller incisions, reduced blood loss and risk of infection, and shorter recovery periods.
Gastroenterology and GI Surgery
Gastroenterology and GI Surgery
Nationally ranked for the ninth consecutive year, Scripps is recognized for treating the most challenging digestive and liver problems as well as offering access to emerging therapies through clinical research. In 1990, Scripps established San Diego’s first liver transplant program and founded the Scripps Clinic Liver Disease Center, which is internationally recognized for research and treatment of people with chronic liver disease.
Nationally High Performing Specialties
U.S. News also recognizes “High Performing” hospitals that were not ranked in the top 50 but scored among the top 10 percent of hospitals that received scores.
The combined programs of Scripps Green Hospital and Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla were recognized for high performance in cancer, geriatrics, neurology and neurosurgery, and pulmonology.
Scripps Mercy Hospital (San Diego and Chula Vista) was recognized for high performance in orthopedics.
High Performing in Common Procedures and Conditions
U.S. News also recognizes “High Performing” hospitals in common adult procedures and conditions.
The combined programs of Scripps Green Hospital and Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla were recognized for high performance in abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery, back surgery (spinal fusion), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), colon cancer surgery, heart bypass surgery, heart failure, hip fracture, hip replacement, knee replacement, lung cancer surgery, ovarian cancer surgery, uterine cancer surgery, transcatheter aortic valve replacement, diabetes, kidney failure, pneumonia, stroke and heart attack.

Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas was recognized for high performance in treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart failure, hip fracture, kidney failure, pneumonia and stroke.
State and metro rankings
U.S. News also ranked best regional hospitals within metropolitan areas with a population of a million people or more, based largely on the number of national rankings achieved. The combined programs of Scripps Green and Scripps La Jolla were ranked No. 2 in the San Diego metro area and No. 8 in California.
Scripps Mercy was ranked No. 6 in the San Diego metro area and No. 37 in California.
The U.S. News rankings are the latest accolades earned by Scripps hospitals. In June, Scripps was named one of the top five medium-sized health systems in the nation by Merative, formerly known as IBM Watson Health and Truven. And Fortune Magazine has repeatedly included Scripps among the top employers in the nation on the annual list of the 100 Best Places to Work, ranking the organization No. 87 in the nation in 2022 and the only San Diego-based company to make the list.
Methodology
U.S. News publishes Best Hospitals to help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition or added risk because of other health problems or age. Objective measures such as patient survival and safety data, the adequacy of nurse staffing levels and other data largely determined the rankings in most specialties. The specialty rankings and data were produced for U.S. News by RTI International; a leading research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Using the same data, U.S. News produced the state and metro rankings. All rankings have been published at http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals and will appear in print in the U.S. News Best Hospitals guidebook, available in bookstores and on newsstands in September.
