Scripps ranks No. 4 nationally and is only San Diego health care provider on list

Fortune Magazine has ranked Scripps Health No. 4 on its 2020 list of the 40 Best Workplaces in Health Care. Scripps is the only San Diego-based health care provider to make this year’s list, published April 9 on Fortune’s website, fortune.com.

An article in Fortune about this year’s ranking called out Scripps President and CEO Chris Van Gorder for taking a strong stance to protect employees and the community amid the COVID-19 pandemic through an open letter he recently wrote to San Diego County residents.

Van Gorder issued a public call to action in the letter, saying more must be done to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and to help avoid an overwhelming surge of patients on the health care system. He urged people to take social distancing more seriously, called for a reevaluation of which companies are essential, and said the shelter in place mandate must be stricter.

Putting people first

Van Gorder said he realizes stricter guidelines may mean a more significant effect on the economy, but as a health care provider, his concerns are about the health and well-being of doctors, nurses and support staff, as well as the community at large.

According to a recent survey by people analytics firm Great Place to Work, Fortune’s partner, 94% of Scripps employees say they are proud to tell others where they work. And 93% of Scripps employees say they feel good about the way they contribute to the community.

Selection criteria

To determine this year’s 40 Best Workplaces in Health Care list, Fortune and Great Place to Work analyzed anonymous survey feedback representing nearly 800,000 employees working in the health care and biopharma industries in the United States. The evaluation is based primarily on what employees say about their experiences of trust and reaching their full human potential as part of their organization, regardless of their role. Other factors that are weighed include employees’ daily experiences of innovation, the company’s values and the effectiveness of their leaders.

Additional honors

Earlier this year, Scripps was named to Fortune’s annual list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For, which includes US companies across all industries. Last year, Scripps Health received national workforce honors when it was named among 150 Great Places to Work in Healthcare by Becker’s Healthcare magazine.
