Scripps Green Named Among Nation's Top 100 Hospitals

Scripps Green Hospital 1300×800

For the fourth consecutive year and the sixth time overall, Scripps Green Hospital has been named among the 100 top hospitals in the nation by the international business research firm Truven Health Analytics, formerly Thomson Reuters.

The 20th annual 100 Top Hospitals© list identifies the best hospitals in the United States based on their overall organizational performance, including patient clinical care measures and business efficiency. The 2013 list was released earlier this week by Truven Health analytics. Scripps Green was recognized in the teaching hospitals category.

“This recognition is a testament to the medical staff and our employees, working together to achieve the highest levels of quality performance in the nation,” said Robin Brown Jr., chief executive of Scripps Green Hospital. “Their commitment has produced high value and exceptional care for our patients, and has made a positive difference in our community.”

Scripps Green patients benefit from the hospital’s nationally recognized programs for heart care and heart surgery, a graduate medical education program built around patient-focused care and research, and processes for sharing best practices across the entire Scripps Health system.

10 measures used to compare hospitals

The Truven Health Analytics 100 Top Hospitals study evaluated the performance of 2,922 short-term, acute-care, non-federal hospitals across the country. Truven Health researchers analyzed publicly available information from Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review data, and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Hospital Compare website. Hospitals do not apply to participate in this study and do not pay to market this honor.

Truven Health researchers compared the hospitals by analyzing 10 measures: mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average patient stay, expenses, profitability, patient satisfaction, adherence to clinical standards of care, post discharge mortality and readmission rates for heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia.

“The key to success in a tumultuous environment is visionary leadership that develops and maintains a hospital-wide culture of excellence that cuts across everything, from patient care to housekeeping to administration,” said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president at Truven Health Analytics. “The winners of the Top 100 Hospitals award continue to demonstrate their vision of excellence.”
