Scripps Health Board of Trustees Member Dr. Richard L. Hall Dies at Age 75

San Diego – Richard Lee Hall, M.D., retired board-certified urologist and active member of the Scripps Health Board of Trustees, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 15, from complications of a stroke. He was 75.


“Dr. Hall was a physician member of the Scripps Health Board of Trustees for the past five years representing the community by bringing his medical knowledge and experience to the rest of the Board in a critical leadership position,” said Chris Van Gorder, president and chief executive officer of Scripps Health. “He was well respected by his Board colleagues, management and physicians across the Scripps system and community for his knowledge, commitment and gentle demeanor. He will be greatly missed by us all.”


A memorial service for Dr. Hall is planned, but no details are available at this time.


Dr. Richard Hall practiced medicine in San Diego for more than 35 years, most recently at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. He also was an assistant clinical professor of urologic surgery at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine.


Dr. Hall was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the largest organization of surgeons in the world, and past president of the San Diego Chapter. He also was a member and past president of the San Diego Urological Society. Prior to his retirement from medical practice, he was a member of the San Diego County Medical Society and the California Medical Association.


After retiring from medical practice in 2005, Dr. Hall became an honorary staff member at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, and was appointed to the Scripps Health Board of Trustees in 2006. He was expected to complete his second consecutive, three-year term in December 2011.


Born in Los Angeles and a resident of La Jolla, Calif., Dr. Hall earned his Artium Baccalaureatus (A.B.) degree from Stanford University, Palo Alto, Calif., and his doctor of medicine at the University of Chicago, Chicago. Dr. Hall completed his rotating internship at King County Hospital, Seattle, in 1962; residency program in general surgery at Wadsworth Veterans Administration Hospital, Los Angeles, in 1964; and residency program in urology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and affiliated hospitals in 1970.


Dr. Richard Hall is survived by his wife, Judy Hall, of La Jolla, Calif., and their daughters, Nicole Hall Brown, of San Diego, Calif., and Diana Hall Ferguson of New Canaan, Conn.
