Giuseppe Ammirati, MD

Giuseppe Ammirati, MD, is an interventional neuroradiologist who specializes in the treatment of strokes and other neurovascular conditions. He is the director of neurointerventional radiology for Scripps Health. 

Dr. Ammirati’s expertise includes minimally invasive procedures, such as mechanical embolectomies and thrombectomies, which are designed to remove the blockages in blood vessels that cause acute ischemic strokes. He also provides treatment for complex brain aneurysms, including those previously labeled inoperable, with interventions designed to eliminate or reduce bleeding.

In addition to emergency procedures for strokes and aneurysms, Dr. Ammirati also performs interventions to stabilize unruptured intracranial aneurysms, as well as intracranial, head and neck arteriovenous malformation (AVM) or dural arteriovenous malformation/fistula (DAVM/DAVF). He also treats conditions using intracranial stents, carotid artery stents, diagnostic cerebral angiography and WADA testing. 

He performs procedures such as kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty for fractured vertebrae, minimally invasive spinal cord stimulator implants for chronic back pain and failed back syndromes, epidural injections or nerve blocks for neck and back pain, and provocative discograms.

Dr. Ammirati believes that the best doctor-patient relationships are developed through open, honest communication and a personalized approach to every patient’s treatment plan.

Outside of his clinical practice, Dr. Ammirati is involved in clinical trials to evaluate the newest and most innovative technologies related to treatment of acute ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic strokes. Dr. Ammirati’s research has been published in numerous scientific publications and he regularly presents at neuroradiology conferences.

He is a member of numerous professional societies, including the American College of Radiology, the California Radiological Society and the San Diego County Radiological Society.

When he is not treating patients, Dr. Ammirati enjoys playing soccer, skiing, cooking, and reading classic Italian and European literature.
